President Trump signed over 40 actions, including executive orders, on his first day in office. The actions are largely in-keeping with the President’s campaign promises and agenda. Many of the orders are aimed at stemming the flow of illegal immigration across the southern border, streamlining government bureaucracy, and outlining an “America First” policy agenda across several departments and agencies.
President Trump’s actions on day one of his administration include:
Economy & Trade
- A memorandum directing federal departments and agencies to deliver emergency price relief, consistent with applicable law, to the American people and increase the prosperity of the American worker.
- A memorandum directing his administration to review trade policies and take action to address unfair and unbalanced trade practices.
- A memorandum directing the Secretary of the Treasury to investigate whether any foreign countries are not in compliance with any tax treaty with the United States or have any tax rules in place, or are likely to put tax rules in place, that are extraterritorial or disproportionately affect American companies.
Border Security & Immigration
- A proclamation declaring a national emergency at the southern border.
- An executive order defining the military’s role in securing the border.
- An executive order suspending decisions on applications for entry under the Refugee Admissions Program.
- An executive order ending birthright citizenship in the United States.
- An executive order directing the construction of a border wall, removal of illegal immigrants from the United States, and cessation of the CBP One app.
- An executive order declaring it the policy of the United States to faithfully execute the immigration laws against all inadmissible and removable aliens.
- An executive order requiring enhanced vetting and screening procedures across agencies.
- An executive order designating cartels as foreign terrorist organizations.
- A proclamation imposing restrictions on illegal entry to the United States.
Energy & Environmental Resources
- An executive order encouraging energy exploration and production on federal lands and waters, eliminate the electric vehicle mandate, and establish America’s position as the leading producer and processor of non-fuel minerals, including rare earth minerals.
- A memorandum directing the Department of Interior to route more water to areas impacted by wildfires in California.
- An executive order declaring a national emergency for energy production in the United States.
- A memorandum directing the review of the federal government’s leasing and permitting practices for wind projects.
- An executive order to expedite the permitting and leasing of energy and natural resource projects in Alaska.
Foreign Policy & National Security
- An executive order to direct his administration to put the interests of the United States and the American people first in the development and negotiation of any international agreements with the potential to damage or stifle the American economy.
- An executive order withdrawing the United States from the World Health Organization (WHO).
- An executive order issuing policy that no further United States foreign assistance shall be disbursed in a manner that is not fully aligned with the foreign policy of the President of the United States and issuing a 90 day pause in United States foreign development assistance for assessment of programmatic efficiencies and consistency with United States foreign policy.
- A memorandum on the organization and definition of roles within the National Security Council.
- An executive order directing the Secretary of State to issue guidance bringing the Department of State’s policies, programs, personnel, and operations in line with an America First foreign policy, which puts America and its interests first.
Technology
- An executive order granting TikTok a 75 day extension period to comply with The Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act.
Government Bureaucracy & Operations
- A proclamation ordering flags to be flown at full mast on government buildings on Inauguration Day.
- An executive order revoking numerous Biden Administration executive orders across many policy issues.
- An executive order directing his administration to prevent the use of government processes and the judicial system against political opponents.
- A memorandum to freeze federal hiring except for select essential areas.
- A memorandum to require federal employees to return to work in-person.
- A memorandum to place a freeze on new federal regulations unless the President reviews and approves the new rule.
- An executive order restoring the creation of Schedule F in the excepted service of federal employees.
- An executive order issuing policy directing individuals who hold government-issued security clearances should not use their clearance status to influence U.S. elections.
- A memorandum granting immediate interim security clearances to top administration personnel.
- A memorandum requesting policy recommendations pertaining to construction of federal buildings in classical and traditional architecture.
- A memorandum affirming the President’s executive authority to remove career senior executives at the federal level.
- An executive order establishing the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
- An executive order directing federal agencies to develop a hiring plan to prioritize recruitment of individuals committed to improving the efficiency of the Federal government, passionate about the ideals of our American republic, and committed to upholding the rule of law and the United States Constitution and prevent the hiring of individuals based on their race, sex, or religion, and prevent the hiring of individuals who are unwilling to defend the Constitution or to faithfully serve the Executive Branch.
- An executive order renaming Denali to Mount McKinley and renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.
Justice System
- A proclamation granting pardon to individuals for their conduct related to the events at or near the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021.
- An executive order restoring the death penalty at the federal level for certain crimes.
Social & Cultural Issues
- An executive order to prevent the federal government or federal employees from facilitating the censorship of free speech.
- An executive order declaring it the policy of the United States to recognize two sexes, male and female, which are not changeable.
- An executive order directing the Director of the Office of Management and Budget to coordinate the termination of all discriminatory programs, including illegal DEI and “diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility” (DEIA) mandates, policies, programs, preferences, and activities in the federal government.
