AGS Section 232 Report

On June 3, 2025, President Trump issued a Proclamation increasing the Section 232 tariff on steel and aluminum from 25% to 50% for all countries except for the United Kingdom. The amended tariff took effect at 12:01am EDT on June 4, 2025. The proclamation can be found here. The White House factsheet can be found here. June 3 Proclamation Adjusting Imports of Aluminum and Steel Into the United States

  • The tariff on U.S. imports of steel and steel derivatives was increased from 25% to 50%
  • The tariff on U.S. imports of aluminum and aluminum derivatives was increased from 25% to 50%
  • U.S. imports of steel and aluminum from the UK remain at 25% under the U.S.-UK Economic Prosperity Deal, with potential adjustments based on compliance
  • The proclamation added 23 new steel derivative products with a U.S. import value of $14.6 billion in 2024
  • The proclamation added 10 new aluminum derivative products with a U.S. import value of $14.2 billion in 2024
  • The U.S. imported $233.3 billion of affected steel and aluminum products in 2024
  • The president made the tariff adjustments “after considering current information newly provided by the Secretary [of Commerce], among other things…”
  • U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) will issue guidance mandating strict compliance with declaration requirements for steel and aluminum content in imported articles
