On Monday evening at approximately 6:28pm EDT, a man armed with a high powered long gun entered the lobby of a prominent midtown Manhattan skyscraper and opened fire. The skyscraper, located at 345 Park Avenue (between 51st and 52ndStreet) housed an office for the National Football League, along with major financial firms Blackstone, KPMG and Deutsche Bank. Surveillance images captured the gunman wearing sunglasses and holding what appeared to be a rifle outside the building. The Associated Press reported that the gunman is a27 year old male, named Shane Tamura, who drove to New York City from Las Vegas, Nevada. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department has stated that Tamura has a documented mental health history.
It has been reported that the gunman was possibly wearing a bulletproof vest, opened fire in the lobby and then proceeded to the elevator bank, moving to upper floors. At least four individuals were killed, including an off duty, New York City Police Officer, who was working in the building, providing private security. Another individual was shot and seriously injured during the incident.
The suspect later barricaded himself (reports mention the 33rd floor), and was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. New York City Mayor Eric Adams stated that the shooter was “Neutralized” at the scene. FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino stated that the FBI New York Field Office was responding to provide support and that the NYPD was currently leading the investigation. The New York City Police Commissioner stated, during a press conference Monday night, that the NYPD is treating this as a lone gunman incident and that there is no longer an active threat.
The 33rd Floor of the building was occupied by Rudin Management Company, one of the largest privately owned real estate companies in New York City.
During the incident, individuals inside the building sheltered in place, hiding in kitchens and bathrooms, blocking doors. They were all later escorted out. Witnesses have been on local media describing the lockdown and active shooter drills, as security protocols unfolded.
A motive for the shooting has not been disclosed and the connection between Tamura and the victims was not clear Monday night.
